1.Teknik Membaca: Skimming & Scanning
3.Main Idea, Reference Words & Writer's Purpose
The main idea is the central point a writer wants the reader to understand about a topic, usually expressed in a topic sentence and supported by details and examples.
- Topic sentence — often the first or last sentence of a paragraph. The other sentences explain or give examples of it.
- Supporting details — facts, examples and reasons. A detail is not the main idea, so do not choose an option that only mentions one example.
- Reference words — pronouns such as it, they, this, these and which point back to an earlier idea. To find what they refer to, look at the sentence before and test your answer by replacing the pronoun with it.
- Signal words — however and although show contrast; therefore and as a result show effect; for example introduces support.
- Writer's purpose — decide whether the writer mainly wants to inform, persuade, advise or entertain.
- Tone and attitude — words such as unfortunately, surprisingly or sadly reveal the writer's feelings. Common attitude words include optimistic, critical, sympathetic and doubtful.
Reading tasks may be multiple choice, matching or gapped texts where sentences have been removed; all of them test these same skills of spotting the main idea and following how ideas connect.
4.Reading Tips & Common Traps
Use these strategies to avoid losing easy marks:
- Read the questions first — underline key words so you know what to look for.
- Beware of word matching — an option that copies exact words from the text is often a trap; the correct answer is usually a paraphrase.
- Gapped texts — check the words just before and after the gap. Pronouns, linkers and tenses must fit on both sides.
- Inference — choose what the text supports, not what you personally believe.
If two options seem correct, return to the text and find the line that proves one of them.
Contoh 1Read the paragraph: ‘Many students believe that studying late at night is effective. However, research on memory suggests that sleep helps the brain store what we learn during the day. Students who cut their sleep may therefore remember less, not more.’ What is the main idea? A. Students study late at night. B. Sleep helps students remember what they learn. C. Research is difficult to understand. D. Students should study in the day only.Lihat jalan kerjaTutup
Answer: B. The signal word However introduces the writer's real point, and therefore gives the conclusion: less sleep leads to weaker memory. A is only the belief being challenged, C is not mentioned, and D goes further than the text says.
Contoh 2Choose the sentence that best fills the gap: ‘Our school started a recycling programme last year. ______ Since then, the amount of rubbish sent to the landfill from our canteen has dropped noticeably.’ A. Recycling is popular in many countries. B. Every class was given three bins for paper, plastic and cans. C. However, nobody wanted to join. D. The canteen sells nasi lemak.Lihat jalan kerjaTutup
Answer: B. The sentence after the gap begins Since then, so the gap must describe an action that led to less rubbish. B gives that action. A is too general, C contradicts the positive result, and D is unrelated.
